As mass ended, we sang a closing hymn, including these words:
And Your breath is
Your love,
And we pour out our praise.
And You breath is
Your love,
And we pour out our praise.
The words were soft and loving, as spoken to Jesus in front of us there. But then I recalled Genesis (4:7), where God breathed the breath of life into man. It fit with the hymn’s words. God’s breath is love.
But then I touched the mask I was wearing in church, and I had another thought: God breathes life, and now man breathes death. Man breathes and the Covid virus spreads death to others. In our culture man wants everything to go his way; priorities are totally focused on self, denying love of God or neighbor as important --- and that is thought of as a good thing. Man wants to be as God, and now his breath does the exact opposite of God’s. It’s like the Garden of Eden all over again. And I’m sure the devil is claiming victory, for man has chosen to be like him.
But he thought the same thing before Jesus came the first time.
